Mixed-Use

Mixed-Use

Successful residence hall environments facilitate the sharing of ideas among students, contribute to their emotional growth, and promote the development of peer relationships. These facilities also help to advance an institution’s strategic mission by creating a sense of community and fostering a sense of place and school pride.

Student residence halls are a key component to a well-rounded education. Much of what students learn is actually learned outside the classroom and much of this informal learning will take place within the residence hall.

In addition to providing housing, today’s residence halls must

reflect an institution’s academic mission, its unique culture and its social philosophy. While programmatic elements take top priority, these facilities must also comfortably fit within the existing campus environment in visual harmony with their surroundings.

SMA has experience designing a wide variety of mixed use types in both urban and non-urban settings. These include:

  • loft-style apartments
  • two-year school housing
  • living/learning communities
  • traditional student residences
