Meet our newest mechanical interns!

Hi! I am Dario, I am a Penn State Student currently enrolled in the Renewable Energy Engineering program. I am a Mechanical Engineering intern here at Smith Miller Associates. I have learned great skills in the HVAC designing process that leads to the construction of such systems in the buildings we use in our daily lives. I plan to keep learning what this industry has to offer and use the information learned in school to further advance my learning. I am excited to be part of this team at Smith Miller Associates.

Brian Tylutke will be graduating this May 2024 from PSU Hazleton with a B.S. in Engineering in Alternative Energy & Power Generation. He joins Smith Miller Associates as an intern with commercial nuclear and mechanical engineering experience and a background in data analytics. He hopes to contribute to the future of SMA after graduation.

Valley Youth House Breaks Ground for State-of-the-Art Recreation & Education Center at Camp Fowler

SMA donated engineering services in support of the new recreation and education center at Camp Fowler

Valley Youth House is thrilled to announce that ground was broken today for their new state-of-the-art recreation and education center, the Carter Family Center, located at Camp Fowler in Orefield, PA. Plans for the Carter Family Center were approved on January 2, 2024 by the North Whitehall Township Board of Supervisors. The new recreation and education center will be about 5,000 square feet in size, and will include the Schamberger STEM Lab as well as an Arts Lab, camp coordinators office, break room, and a storage space – a welcome addition to the extensive programming offered by Valley Youth House at Camp Fowler.

“It’s exciting to see the Carter Family Center project moving forward,” said Eric Scheler, VP of Construction at Watson Land Company. “This facility will complement the recently completed cabin rebuild project and add a vital new education and recreation facility for our youth to utilize during their camp experience. The efforts of all those involved are greatly appreciated and the long range planning of Camp Fowler continues to become more in focus.”

Camp Fowler was established in 2004 and offers a variety of programs that utilize nature’s restorative and stress-reducing benefits to provide therapeutic outdoor experiences for young people. In addition to the summer programs, Valley Youth House also rents out the camp throughout the year to different organizations such as Pennsylvania State Police Troop N Camp Cadet, and Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Camp Red Jacket.

“Valley Youth House has been a mainstay in our community for the past 50 years in providing innovative ways to help children and families become stronger. Camp Fowler provides fun, restorative outdoor education programs for children from all walks of life to explore the outdoors and grow physically, mentally and emotionally,” said Tom Harrington, President & Executive Director of Valley Youth House. “The Carter Family Center will provide our team with additional in-door, year-round space to work with groups of children, including local school groups, church groups and Scout troops, in providing these exciting educational programs,” he added.

At the end of 2021, through the generous donation of her home in South Carolina, Valley Youth House received a lead gift from Tammy Carter to help with the campaign to build the Carter Family Center. The vision for the Carter Family Center is to have a recreation and education center to round out services for Valley Youth House’s young campers. The agency envisions a space for indoor activities and educational programming to complement their enrichment programs. The Carter Family Center will expand the usefulness of the camp for Valley Youth House clients, as well as for the many community groups that use Camp Fowler.

“We are thrilled to help celebrate this exciting milestone on the journey to bring the dream of the Carter Family Center at Camp Fowler to life. Our team is quite literally ready to dig in and get to work preparing this dynamic recreation center to serve the youth of our community,” shared James (Jim) Hoolehan, President of Penntex Construction, the Carter Family Center’s construction management partner who is donating their project oversight services in support of the effort. “We are grateful to our many trusted construction partners and vendors who did not hesitate in stepping up beside us to go the extra mile in their commitment of talent and resources to help ensure this new vital community resource could become a reality.”

Our electrical intern Zachary shares his experience at SMA this summer.

My name is Zachary, and I am a 5 ^th year Electrical Engineering Technology senior at Penn State University. I am an Electrical Engineer intern here at Smith Miller. I’ll be working at Smith Miller while finishing my final semester.

Since starting, I have learned several invaluable lessons in the field of engineering in my short time here already. I look forward to continuing on my career path here at Smith Miller, expanding my knowledge in the field of engineering, and making meaningful connections with others here and throughout the engineering community.

SMA is pleased to announce our two new June hires: mechanical intern, Anna, and full time electrical designer, Joseph!

Hi! I'm Anna, a junior mechanical engineering major at Wilkes University.

I am currently a Mechanical Design Intern here at Smith Miller. Since beginning here, I have learned real life HVAC and plumbing skills. While working on multiple projects, I have been able to understand the expectations much better. The real-life applications of what I have learned in school have helped me tremendously with progressing my learning career. I am excited to continue through my learning journey here at Smith Miller!

Joseph Rutkowski graduated from Wilkes University this May and works at SMA as a Junior Electrical Designer. In his spare time, he enjoys watching motorsports and also taking walks through nature. Joseph is looking forward to his future with Smith Miller Associates!

Our mechanical intern has been hired full time as a mechanical junior designer!

Stephen Gazey has joined SMA as a full time employee in our mechanical department. Stephen was hired in the summer of 2022 as an intern, and recently graduated from Wilkes University. As a mechanical junior designer, Stephen will receive on the job training, and provide project support including drafting, engineering calculations, and entry level design tasks related to the engineering, design, and production for HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection Systems.

Groundbreaking for $44 million La Mora Senior Living project

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Oct. 12 for La Mora Senior Apartments, an affordable housing project to be built on a plot of land in Yonkers where the city’s Longfellow School once stood at 23 Mulberry St.

The new building will be located at 23 Mulberry St, where Longfellow School was located.

The building will be approximately 66,900 SF, four stories, and contain 60 apartment units . The apartments will be available to residents 62 years and older with incomes at or below 60% of the area median income.

The project will be designed to the NY State Homes & Community Renewal, Sustainability Standards and Design Handbook. SMA will support the third-party sustainability consultant by providing calculations and documentation as required.

Design work performed includes:

New HVAC systems.
New sanitary, vent, domestic hot and cold water, and fuel piping as required. Design and submission of backflow preventor for water services.
Wet Pipe Sprinkler with fire pump-Hydraulic Calculations including pipe sizing.
Lighting design for interior locations.
Exterior lighting will be from the building.
Electrical power including new panel boards for new equipment, lighting and receptacles, signage, parking lot lights as required.
Design of a new emergency generator.
Life safety exit signs and lighting.
CATV, Data and telephone system, wiring from service provider de-mark points, conduit systems and wall mounted jacks.
Fire alarm detection and alarm systems.

Ribbon cutting ceremony marks debut of Community Bank flagship PA location in Wilkes-Barre Township

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Community Bank N.A. President of PA Banking Barbara Maculloch Wednesday said the bank’s new flagship location “is home.”

“This is a place that will allow us to deepen our relationships with current customers and grow with new ones, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome the community to this new location,” Maculloch said.

Community Bank held the official opening of its new 16,000-square-foot building at 350 Liberty Plaza next to the Mohegan Sun Arena and the Marriott Residence Inn. The new modern and conveniently located building is the focus for its Pennsylvania operations.

Maculloch said the flagship location integrates the latest state-of-the-art technology systems and design, creating a unique space for customers and employees.

The building includes three drive-thru lanes, two ATMs with plenty of parking options and a modern banking experience for customers.

“Our branches are a reflection of our people, from our employees and our customers to the communities we live and work in,” Maculloch said. “This flagship location really is home.”

Maculloch said the bank will employ 30 people in retail banking, commercial banking, wealth management, human resources, cash management and public relations. She said the “flagship” location gives Community Bank an increased presence in the region.

“It feels like we’ve arrived,” Maculloch said. “Community Bank is now on the map — we are taking banking relationships to a new level.”

Maculloch said all banks offer pretty much the same services, but at Community Bank, she said the focus will always be on delivering the best experience for every customer served.

“That’s what is important to us,” Maculloch said. “Our competition is very strong. It’s our top priority to treat people the best we can.”

Mark Tryniski, CEO of Community Bank at its corporate headquarters in suburban Syracuse, N.Y., said he is thrilled to see the “new, beautiful building that Barb has been dreaming about.”

And Tryniski quickly noted that Community Bank is not about the building.

“We’re about the people,” he said. “We want our customers to have an incredible banking experience when they enter this building.”

Standing next to Tryniski was PGA Tour golfer Brandon Matthews, a Dupont native and Pittston Area product, who reached a sponsorship deal with Community Bank back in May. Matthews said he was proud to be able to represent the local brand.

“I couldn’t ask for a better partner,” Matthews said of Community Bank. “I’m very thankful for them to be a partner of mine and I wear this logo proudly. Community Bank supports every community where they are located. I’m proud to partner with them.”

Construction of the new facility began on June 2, 2021, on the 2.277-acre parcel and the flagship location officially welcomed customers on Sept. 26.

Meet our fall Mechanical Design Intern Taylor!

Hi! I'm Taylor, a junior mechanical engineering major and women's lacrosse player at Wilkes University.

I am currently a Mechanical Design Intern here at Smith Miller. I feel that I have truly expanded my knowledge of the engineering world since I've been here, especially in HVAC and plumbing, as well as significantly upgrading my AutoCAD skills. I have had the opportunity to work on various projects ranging from small chapels to large warehouses to expand my knowledge and see real life applications of concepts I've learned in my time at Wilkes. My experience here so far has taught me things I probably would have never learned by sitting in a classroom, and I am excited to continue to build upon my skills as an engineer.

Two of our interns have been hired on as full time employees in our electrical engineering department.

Sean Ferry is a recent graduate of Luzerne County Community College in Electrical Construction Technology. Sean started as an intern in June 2022, and has been recently hired as an Electrical Designer at Smith Miller Associates. In his free time, he enjoys making and designing things from bicycles and 3D printed "nerf" blasters to keyboards and racing drones. Sean's favorite place to be is relaxing on a beach next to his fiancée.

Bo is a recent Wilkes University EE graduate. He began as intern and was hired full time in June 2022 as an Junior Electrical Design Engineer at Smith Miller Associates, studying to become EIT certified. Bo loves the field for its real-world applications of power electronics and power distribution, seeing the fruits of the company drafting and design work, and is looking forward to becoming proficient in the field, step by step. He loves the PA outdoors, staying healthy, and likes locally volunteering almost daily.

Mechanical Intern Stephen Gazey shares his experience at SMA.

Hi! I'm Steve, a Senior Engineering and Graphic Design Student at Wilkes University.

I joined the team this summer as an intern, and I have learned a good variety from several trades. From HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical design, I have learned how to use REVIT and CAD for real-world projects. Working on jobs such as apartment buildings and college dorms, to large-scale warehouses, I experienced many different scenarios to apply what I had learned. I really enjoyed my summer here and can't wait to come back next year after I graduate. It is true that you will learn more in 3 weeks when you're on the job than in 3 years in a classroom!

We've added a few new faces to the team!

Savanah Aton recently graduated from Wilkes University this year. She is a Junior Mechanical Designer at Smith Miller Associates, with hopes to become an EIT within the next year. Savanah enjoys horse back riding, and even volunteers with her local 4-H group. She is looking forward to what her future at Smith Miller Associates holds!

April joined SMA in April 2022. She has over a decade's worth of experience with online marketing, event planning, and administration. She is a 2018 Leadership Lackawanna graduate, and is currently serving as a board member for NEPA Youth Shelter. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, antiquing, and exploring PA with her husband.

Mr. Borger has been involved in the engineering, design, and preparation of contract documents for a wide range of mechanical systems installations for new and existing commercial buildings. Applications including all areas of hospitals and health care facilities, short and long term care institutions, laboratories, inpatient and outpatient facilities, office buildings, multi-use, retail, educational institutions (K-12, middle, high, special needs, and universities), warehouses and distribution facilities, courthouses, prisons, police stations, airports, Veteran’s Administration facilities, government and military installations, DOT and municipality’s offices and maintenance facilities, large commercial vehicle maintenance facilities, kitchens, cafeterias, gymnasiums and natatoriums, and all types of commercial buildings.

Specific areas of design include chiller/boiler plants, pumping stations, steam systems, make-up air and air handling units, air, water, steam and compressed air distribution systems, exhaust systems, variable refrigerant flow systems, emergency generator and compressed air systems, automatic temperature control and building management systems.

SMA announced as Lehigh Valley Award Honoree

Smith Miller was part of a team that received an Honoree award from the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission in the Revitalization category for The Fowler Community Wellness Center restoration project. The new center, which is a restored and renovated former bank building, was donated by the late philanthropist Linny Fowler. Its purpose is to offer physical and mental healthcare, health and wellness education, academic enrichment and a range of job readiness and job placement services leading to economic self-sufficiency to the south side residents which will in turn lead to healthier and more productive lives. The rest of the team includes Burkavage Design Associates, Allied Building Corporation, St. Luke's University Health Network, RETTEW, and the City of Bethlehem.

Attendance at a Design Management Fundamentals Course

Our Principals, Charles Smith and Todd Miller, attended a Design Management Fundamentals course with the Design-Build Institute of America at Sordoni Construction Services in Forty Fort. The program was held in September 2017 and it provided attendees with a foundation of the practical tools, information and advice needed to successfully fulfill the obligations of the role of design manager on a design-built project.
